In October 1985,
I recorded what was a watershed cassette for me. It was the first time my songwriting
and recording really gelled. The standout song of the collection was “Simple
Toys.” Bob Rein mixed and mastered it, the first of many of our recording
collaborations.
Don't Laugh
© Brian Hutzell
1985
You find humor in
the weirdest places
I'm not making
jokes or funny faces
But you're
laughing at me
My self-esteem
Can only hold on
for so long
You think
everything is entertainment
My sole mission
isn't your amusement
But you're
laughing at me
What does it
mean?
Do I mean that
little to you?
When a situation
goes bad
You go from happy
to sad
Then we laugh
about it later
Look back
Life is slapstick
at best.
Don't laugh; it's
not funny
The humor hasn't
hit me
Don't laugh; it's
not funny
The future will
forgive me
It's fast; it's
off running
But clear enough
to see
Don't laugh;
don't laugh at me
Life is comical
but also tragic
Expect anything
except the magic
Still you're
laughing at me
What do you see
To make you
believe it's not wrong?
When a situation
goes bad
You go from happy
to sad
Then we laugh
about it later
Look back
Life is slapstick
at best.
Don't laugh; it's
not funny
The humor hasn't
hit me
Don't laugh; it's
not funny
The future will
forgive me
It's fast; it's off
running
But clear enough
to see
Don't laugh;
don't laugh at me
