"Varykino"

This is one of my best songs. It was recorded twice, first on Spring ’88, then again on Malec I. This is the latter version. The title comes from my favorite movie, Doctor Zhivago.

We've been told by an unofficial friend
This time of innocence is coming to an end
And the lifestyle we're living can't go on
Cause there are people now who'd like to see it gone
They've come up with a solution to all ills,
Something infinitely fair
I admit the theory sounds alright but still
Something tells me to beware

Where can we go?
Varykino
Living our numbered days
Call it our own
Varykino
Until they come, we'll be safe
Va va go go—Varykino
Varykino: there's our only hope
Va va go go—Varykino
Varykino: sanctuary, home

There's a plan to eradicate the old
Those who favor change are numerous and bold
They say there's no justice in the world today
The current system is evil, so they say
We've been given unsolicited advice
We've been walking on thin ice
Every movement is watched and written down
We've got to move underground

Where can we go?
Varykino
Living our numbered days
Call it our own
Varykino
Until they come, we'll be safe
Va va go go—Varykino
Varykino: there's our only hope
Va va go go—Varykino
Varykino: sanctuary, home

Brother, do you know what a dime buys
Give me a spare - who cares?
It isn't much seeing how time flies

They can find us anywhere if that's their plan
Better later than now
In the meantime, we must live as best we can
Long as fate will allow

Where can we go?
Varykino
Living our numbered days
Call it   our own
Varykino
Until they come, we'll be safe
Va va go go—Varykino
Varykino: there's our only hope
Va va go go—Varykino
Varykino: sanctuary, home
