"Toast"

One of a handful of AIDS songs I’ve written. This one is a little heavy-handed. That’s probably why I never recorded it.

Toast

Hot bodies hugging the dirt
Skin to the ground, getting off on the earth
Sex for dinner, death for dessert
A mighty high price for what it’s worth

So here’s to a rubber sheath--better than wearing a black wreath
Here’s to love and safety
My toast is a toast to common sense
I’m not gonna stop doing what I want
But I’ll do it with intelligence

If I could, I’d be naked all the time
I love the tremor of your body with mine
I’m happy to drive or happy to ride
And I'm most alive when death is nearby

So here’s to a rubber sheath--better than wearing a black wreath
Here’s to love and safety
My toast is a toast to common sense
I’m not gonna stop doing what I want
But I’ll do it with intelligence

I’ve been accused of gluttony
But that doesn’t paint me accurately
My primary pleasure is to please
When you come, it does the same for me

So here’s to a rubber sheath--better than wearing a black wreath
Here’s to love and safety
My toast is a toast to common sense
I’m not gonna stop doing what I want
But I’ll do it with intelligence

Yes, do that.
It’s a very fine way to get to know you
Yes, undress.
I’ve got some things I want to show you
Negative or positive--either way, there’s life to live
Show me your affection, but do it with protection

So here’s to a rubber sheath--better than wearing a black wreath
Here’s to love and safety
My toast is a toast to common sense
I’m not gonna stop doing what I want
But I’ll do it with intelligence
