When I listen to
a song, I listen primarily for the melody. I like a song that I can sing – one that
doesn’t rely on fancy production tricks. Billy Joel said in an interview that
the test of a good song is whether or not it sounds good played on the piano.
He used his own “We Didn’t Start the Fire” as an example of a bad song, because
it sounds terrible played on the piano.
I don’t consider myself
a singer, but an instrumentalist who sometimes sings.
Current
listening: Laura Nyro, The First Songs.
Singer-songwriter pop at its best. In the best of all possible worlds, my life’s
work would be in that genre. I would have made a good 1970s singer-songwriter,
but I’m afraid that window of opportunity may be closed.

We put our faith
in these
Little tidbits
that we see
Keep it simple,
please
I don’t have a
large memory
And keep it
moving
I lose interest
quickly
Don’t be a tease
That’s too
frustrating
Give it to me
straight--don’t dilute
Don’t be clever;
don’t be cute
I like my facts
unsweetened, like my tea

Pipe dreams,

We put our faith
in these
It’s the easy
thing to do
