"Tidbits"

When I listen to a song, I listen primarily for the melody. I like a song that I can sing – one that doesn’t rely on fancy production tricks. Billy Joel said in an interview that the test of a good song is whether or not it sounds good played on the piano. He used his own “We Didn’t Start the Fire” as an example of a bad song, because it sounds terrible played on the piano.

I don’t consider myself a singer, but an instrumentalist who sometimes sings.

Current listening: Laura Nyro, The First Songs. Singer-songwriter pop at its best. In the best of all possible worlds, my life’s work would be in that genre. I would have made a good 1970s singer-songwriter, but I’m afraid that window of opportunity may be closed.

Books and novels, magazines
Manufactured by machines
Quips and stories, anecdotes
Gossip columns, pithy quotes

We put our faith in these
We put our faith in these
We put our faith in these
Little tidbits that we read

Plays and movies, TV shows
News that claims to tell the truth, but no one knows
Electronic mail on the Internet
You wouldn’t believe how lost you get

We put our faith in these
We put our faith in these
We put our faith in these
Little tidbits that we see

Keep it simple, please
I don’t have a large memory
And keep it moving
I lose interest quickly
Don’t be a tease
That’s too frustrating
Give it to me straight--don’t dilute
Don’t be clever; don’t be cute
I like my facts unsweetened, like my tea

15 Minute media stars
Working class heroes with loud guitars
Government crooks, religious frauds
Pipe dreams, phony gods
We put our faith in these little tidbits
We put our faith in these little tidbits
We put our faith in these
It’s the easy thing to do
