This is sort of a
companion piece to “What The Others Are Doing.” I remember writing them both
late at night at the kitchen table in Medford. As I write this, I am listening
to The Human League’s debut album, Reproduction,
on Spotify. According to Wikipedia, it was recorded in 1979. Those were the
pre-MTV days. By the time I wrote this song, MTV was an established media
superpower, and was about to begin losing its focus as a music station. Also,
by 1986, the music industry was already leaving me behind. My best window of
opportunity was closing. I tried to pry it back open a few times, but the moment
had passed.
We Went Along With That
© 1986 Brian Hutzell
You read it in a
book
And I saw it in a
movie
Two people, one
on one
First time,
sudden love
Went home
together
And they saw the
same morning
One day,
different sun
In a flash, all
undone
We went along
with that, though it didn't make any sense
Like a fallen
acrobat, unbelievable incidents
We went along
with that, we went along with that
Why, I don't
know, but we went along with that
You took another
look
And I checked the
latest papers
Two people, you
and I
In heaven till we
die
Look here, we
made the headlines
And I'll read
about it later
Two chances,
double win
Go for it twice
again
We went along
with that, though it didn't make any sense
Like a fallen
acrobat, unbelievable incidents
We went along
with that, we went along with that
Why, I don't
know, but we went along with that
Can it be believable?
Is it feasible to
please 'em all?
Do you hear the media?
Is it feedin' ya
or eatin' ya?
You saw it in a
book
And I heard in on
the TV
One nation under
god
One paradise for
all
No more deadlines
From now on we
got it easy
Two people in the
snow
Making heat from
the cold
We went along
with that, though it didn't make any sense
Like a fallen
acrobat, unbelievable incidents
We went along
with that, we went along with that
Why, I don't
know, but we went along with that
