"Asteroid"

Just as much as in music, writing has stylistic eras. A book written in 2015 will not be confused for a book written in 1955 or 1875, and so on. Writers adopt the voice of an era and a genre. I’ve noticed that every humor writer for the past 20 years has adopted the Dave Barry Voice. I promise not to do this. Really. I am not making this up.

When I first joined Plastic Mikey, neither the group name nor the final lineup has solidified. Nor had most of the music. Group leader Kevin Dempsey gave me a cassette of instr8mental pieces they’d been experimenting with, and I set about writing lyrics to them. I didn’t really intend to become the lead singer; I simply reasoned that songs with words stood a better chance of getting on the radio and selling CDs than songs without them. It’s been the rare instrumental that has become a hit since the 1970s. Most of the Plastic Mikey’s material didn’t then and doesn’t no show a lot of character. Our one and only CD is beyond boring. I am pleased with some of my lyrics, though, and I’m especially pleased that I was able to write so many so quickly.

Asteroid

Shock me
Wake me from my delirium
Mock me
Ridicule my theory of recent events
Move the witnesses, kill the evidence
That's where it gets ugly
Nobody believes me
Why don't I explode?

Somewhere between Mars and Jupiter
Circling endlessly
She's out there and I'll be true to her
Little Asteroid, come and orbit around me

Shake me
Take me from this hysteria
Break me
You know I'm wary of current trends
Bind my enemies, polarize my friends
I'm so tired of struggling
Against those who deceive me and leave me alone

Somewhere between Mars and Jupiter
Circling endlessly
She's out there and I'll be true to her
Little Asteroid, come and orbit around me

Sometimes I wish I could jump ahead to the good parts
But I don't want to miss the sights along the way

Shove me
Push me toward new experience
Love me
Wish me well-this is serious
Here I go...
Watch me explode

Somewhere between Mars and Jupiter
Circling endlessly
She's out there and I'll be true to her
Little Asteroid, come and orbit around me
