"I Would Prefer Not To"

I always liked this one, though I’m almost alone in that opinion. The lyrics are obviously inspired by Herman Melville’s  Bartleby, the Scrivener. Speaking of Melville, I had never read Moby Dick until a couple of years ago. I hated it. I suppose it’s a well-written book, but I just couldn’t get past the fact that’s it’s all about slaughtering whales. I would prefer not to ever read it again.

I Would Prefer Not To

I would prefer not to
Have to hear about you with other men
I would prefer not to
Have to talk about this problem again
I would prefer not to
Have to justify why I feel this way
I would prefer not to
Have to clarify everything I say

The level of frustration keeps on growing
And I don't see any end in sight
No end in sight
This type of aggravation
Could be avoided any other night
Any other night

I would prefer not to
Have to have this scene ever again
I would prefer not to
Quiet down, but I see the end
