"The Rest of My Life"

Some songs resonate with me more today than they did at the time I wrote them (“Who’s Calling Now?” springs to mind.) This is another one of them. This was another Wally & Brian long distance collaboration. We recorded it a second time when Wally visited me in Des Moines, but I have since lost that recording.

Mama told me, "Boy, you gotta make a living
Can't play the piano for the rest of your life."
Mama told me, "Boy, you gotta think of the kids
And what you have to give 'em.
They need your support to survive."
Oh, mama, I do agree
But I know music, boy, she loves me mighty sweet
Ain't no girl who can love so complete
She waltzes me into the arms of the world
She gets jealous unless I give all my best to her
Oh, mama, have sympathy

For me and my family in our domestic scenery
Safely within our boundary for the rest of my life
The rest of my life

Mama told me, "Boy, you can't make a living
If you keep playing the piano for the rest of your life."
Mama told me, "Boy, you better stop a minute
You hurry around, never thinking about your wife."
Oh, mama, I do agree

I'm so far away from where I thought I would be some day
Is it strange the hopes I aim for aren't the same ones I came for?
For the rest of my life
The rest of my life
The rest of my life

Though I might compromise, I refuse to sacrifice
The values and ideals that taught me truth in my youth

For the rest of my life
The rest of my life
