"A Little Hungry"

My friend Mike in Boston told me long ago to “stay a little hungry.” Good advice. I remembered it when I wrote these lyrics, but I haven’t remembered it nearly often enough since then.

A Little Hungry

I'll keep it short because I know you don't care
If I'm emotionally drained
If I look ahead, I go blind from the glare
I'm cracking under the strain
And yet to look at me you'd never suspect any treachery, lechery
Many who mention to me how well I seem don't mean anything
But I'm so confused I can't see straight down the road
I've been driving so hard
But I'm a little hungry and that is the mouse in my house of cards

I may appear to have it all,
But I'm still a little hungry
Perhaps I'm petty and small,
But I'm still a little hungry
My best of all possible worlds
Is upset by the quest for a wonderful pearl
Until it's safely in the vault, I will be a little hungry

You don't believe I've got a reason to cry
Feel no pity for me
And you accuse me of attempting to buy a little sympathy
But I tell you I'm not trying to sell you a line
I've got no shady design
I'm sure you've heard the one

About how the rich suffer more than the poor
But sometimes one who fits neither niche suffers even more
