This is a theme
that pops up over and over in my dreams and in my songs: the sense that there
is something better beyond my ordinary humdrum existence. “Take Me anywhere” is
another example. Today is January 2nd, 2016, right at the start of a new year.
Why not start today?

I’d Rather Be Flying

I gotta get up at
five AM
(Too early)
I gotta be at
work by six
(I don’t wanna)
I don’t like my
job but I gotta survive
(That sucks)
Fifty-six hours a
week
(Too much) (Tell
me about it)
I’d rather be
flying
I’d rather be
flying
I’m in a rut,
trying to pay my bills
They tell me I’m
just paying dues
It’s hard to get
out of bed
When I know it’s
just another working day ahead
I’d rather be
flying
I’d rather be
flying
Daily routine,
stagnant scenes
What I want is
what I’m not getting
What I see is
where I’m not going
What I get isn’t
worth starving
What I feel: the
boat is too steady
Gotta escape,
break some rules
Gotta forget what
I learned in school
I’d rather be
flying
I’d rather be
flying
I’d rather be
flying through the air
I’d rather be
flying anywhere
I’d rather be
flying above the Earth
Above the city
where I work
Gonna fly away
Gonna leave today
And I’m gonna
stay
Cause it took so
long to find my way
Find my way
