I just picked up
a copy of John Lennon: The Collected
Artwork. Like Lennon, John Lurie, Brian Eno, David Byrne, and many others
whom I admire, I think of myself in broader terms than strictly “a musician.” I
also am a writer, a runner, a composer, a diarist, a blogger, and a reader. There is a
famous video of Jim Morrison being asked his occupation. He replies, “Artist.”
It’s a title that covers a lot of ground. Art can be visual, visceral, virtual, and versatile. It is musical, culinary, physical, dimensional, interdisciplinary, tactile, and literary. There is performance art, fine art, pop art, high art and
low art. I embrace them all. What is my occupation? I am an artist. I have even
on occasion been a model!
In The Nude

Your cheap wine
makes me vomit
A prophet
deserves a decent salad
We don’t need no
soda pop
Je suis malade
All my finest
work is left undone
I don’t believe
in signs
If I did, this
would be one
I let Andy Warhol
paint me in the nude
My nudity makes
me free
Look and see all
of me
The flexible cow
surge
No, I don’t know
what that means
Every
indiscretion is exactly what it seems
Like slips of
paper sticking in a book
Flagging all the
places I think you should look
I let Andy Warhol
paint me in the nude
My nudity makes
me free
Look and see all
of me
I roam like
Johnny Appleseed
Barefoot through
the wilderness
Planting seeds
And spreading my
unique gospel
Pulling weeds
And raising up
the possible
I let Andy Warhol
paint me in the nude
My nudity makes
me free
Look and see all
of me
