"Something Better"

I wish I could think of something clever to write about this song, but nothing’s coming. I don’t have any strong memories associated with writing it, and as I read over the lyrics now, I can only vaguely recall the melody. That doesn’t speak highly for it. I need to write something better.

Something Better

© 2004 Brian Hutzell

Let’s make it clear right from the start: I’ve nothing against you
And I am grateful that you came to my rescue
But lay off now; it’s all done
I admit our time was fun
But I’m waiting for someone who’ll suit me better

My ship was flying so high but I got stranded
You caught me with both hands before I landed
Now you hold me far too near
Though I thought I’d made it clear
That I thought we both should steer toward something better

Something better than loving recklessly
Something better than mere geography
I just happened to be there and you caught me unaware
And it’s not that I don’t care how you feel
Something better waits for us--something less precarious
And we’ll know it when we find something real

You told me everything I wanted to hear
But I’m not sure coincidence makes it dear
It seems like romance should be more than happenstance
And I’m gonna take a chance on something better

Something better than loving recklessly
Something better than mere geography
I just happened to be there and you caught me unaware
And it’s not that I don’t care how you feel
Something better waits for us--something less precarious
And we’ll know it when we find something real

Perhaps I’m wrong thinking scientifically
Cause this luck of the draw seems to fit terrifically
Do you believe in serendipity?
Do you think this love was meant to be?

Is it something better than loving recklessly?
Something better than mere geography?
Maybe this open door is just what I’ve been waiting for
Am I silly to ignore how I feel?
Something better could be us--not the least precarious
I didn’t know it but we found something real
