"No Matter What I Say"

Celebrities can get away with things. Like releasing crap and still making a fortune from it. The big thing for the past few years has been celebrities writing children’s books. Not just any children’s books though – really bad children’s books. And they sell like hotcakes. A celebrity can fill an art gallery with terrible art and sell every last piece. A celebrity can have a ghost writer write an “autobiography,” then reap huge royalty checks. A celebrity can put his or her name on any cheap merchandise and call it a “signature line.” This song is about all of that.

I’ve been feeling a bit bitter lately because everywhere I turn I see stories about rich people who are making more money simply because they are rich people, and poor people love to give rich people their money. Meanwhile, I can’t earn two nickels, no matter how hard I work. So this song perfectly fits my bitching and moaning mood today.

Ho ho he he
Wonderful me
I live my life in ecstasy
If you decide to run and hide
I'll find other company
It's easy to be free
And to write whatever I like
And they'll buy it anyway
No matter what I say

Ho ho he he
Fabulous me
I live my life victoriously
If you decide to stay by my side
I’ll enjoy your company
It's easy, can't you see
That it's nice in paradise
And I love it anyway
No matter what they say

It's easy to be free
And to write whatever I like
And they'll buy it anyway
No matter what I say

And I love you anyway
No matter what you say
And you like me anyway
No matter what I say
And they do it anyway
No matter what we say

"Get It Right Back"

Rock has a history of being over the top macho and bit misogynistic. I adopted that attitude for this song, just to try it on for size, but it’s not me.

Get It Right Back

© 1988 Brian Hutzell

You don't look your age at all
You've got the body of one much older
I don't play guessing games no more
Because the young keep getting bolder
But you've got me in a spot and you think you're gonna win
It's only fair for me to say you'd better think again

If you do that, you're gonna get it right back
Try to act tough
You'd better keep your mouth shut
Know you too well
I'm gonna put you through hell
And if you do that, if you do that
If you do that you're gonna get it right back from me

I don't like your attitude
You've done a lot so you think you're cool
You're stringing me up for tying you down
First you love it then you say it's cruel
You're playing dirty tricks that might have worked once or twice
But the trouble with you chicks is you ignore advice

If you do that, you're gonna get it right back
Try to act tough
You'd better keep your mouth shut
Know you too well
I'm gonna put you through hell
And if you do that, if you do that
If you do that you're gonna get it right back from me

What?
I didn't commit no crime
From the beginning, you were the mastermind
Who?
I've never seen you before
I'm just a poor boy living on a foreign shore

Let's forget this incident
Or I swear it's gonna haunt you
The think you claim I stole from you
Well, we both know where that's gone to
You've got something to sell and I know you can
But the shit you smell's about to hit the fan

If you do that, you're gonna get it right back
Try to act tough
You'd better keep your mouth shut
Know you too well
I'm gonna put you through hell
And if you do that, if you do that
If you do that you're gonna get it right back from me

"Food"

The last cassette collection in my “canon of 6” between October 1985 and May 1986 was TFM. It’s a fun recording, and I hope to get it digitized soon, along with those other tapes. I have tons of stuff on reel-to-reel that needs to be transferred as well. Plus the KR-570 song files. Lots of unfinished business.

It really all comes down to simply doing the work. Steve Martin is quoted as saying the key to success is to “Be so good they can’t ignore you.” Practice practice practice! Put myself and my music in front of an audience on a frequent and regular basis. Use the internet wisely for learning, listening, and promoting. Like all tools, it can be very useful or very dangerous.

Food

Food! Food!
Something to put in my mouth and chew
Food! Food!
Something to put in my mouth and chew
It's food, good food
Something to eat with a knife or fork or spoon
Fill up the tank
It's like our bodies' fuel
Wouldn't lunch be silly without food?
Lunch would be meaningless, of no use
We'll have lunch
No we won't without food
Food, food
I like food
Food, food
Glorious food
Food, food
Food - love it
Food - shove it
Food - pile it in
Don't be thin
Food food food food food food food food food!

"Stop Stealing My Imagination"

Current listening: The Partridge Family, Shopping Bag

Stop Stealing My Imagination

© 1995 Brian Hutzell

Stop stealing my imagination
Leave me some room; don’t show me everything too soon
Stop stealing my imagination. I can think for myself
Stop stealing my imagination
Give me some credit; I don’t need that much help to get it
Stop stealing my imagination. I can think for myself

Do you think I’m stupid? Do you?
Incapable of figuring anything out
Do you think I’m an idiot? Do you?
Not knowing what anything’s about
Unless you spell each word for me, point out every clue
Do the work for me--treat me like a fool

Stop stealing my imagination
Leave me some room; don’t show me everything too soon
Stop stealing my imagination. I can think for myself
Stop stealing my imagination
Give me some credit; I don’t need that much help to get it
Stop stealing my imagination. I can think for myself

Do you think it’s so difficult? Do you?
To put your point across
Do you think it’s impossible? Do you?
To make sure your message isn’t lost
The repetition assaulting me is driving me insane
Your attitude’s insulting me. Who gave you the only brain?

The movies, the papers, the news
Are equally guilty of lowering the curve
And the most disturbing thought
Is that maybe we’re getting what we deserve

We need an understanding for the good of all concerned
If we start demanding more, then everyone can learn

Stop stealing my imagination
Leave me some room; don’t show me everything too soon
Stop stealing my imagination. I can think for myself
Stop stealing my imagination
Give me some credit; I don’t need that much help to get it
Stop stealing my imagination. I can think for myself
