"Acid Rain" with commentary

The band Plastic Mikey existed for just a few years in the mid-1990s. We played lots of coffeehouses, and had a regular gig as an acoustic duo or trio at Sesi’s Seaside CafĂ© in Chicago. That’s when I started playing most of my gigs barefoot. It’s also when I started smoking more. That nasty habit increased when I went to work at a pharmaceutical company and had an unpleasant commute by car. Cigarettes made the commute and the job more tolerable. I quit smoking in the early part of the year 2000 quit the job not long after that.

I was shaking in my shoes, trying to think up an excuse
Why I didn't make a peep when the man stepped on my feet
I was nervous of the whole business
"Have no fear!" said The Cat
I said, "Nobody talks like that
When the only cheery news is finding out we made it through
Another day of acid rain."

He said, "Sure enough, the acid rain will fall
If you think that's tough, just wait till you hit the wall
Don't let this little footrace keep you hiding in your bookcase
Pick up the pace, we can erase the stain of acid rain."

Now I'm hanging with The Cat
And he's got a few tricks in his hat
He's teaching me how to play
And to live every hour of the day
To ease the pain of acid rain

He said, "Sure enough, the acid rain will fall
If you think that's tough, just wait till you hit the wall
Don't let this little footrace keep you hiding in your bookcase
Pick up the pace, we can erase the stain of acid rain."

Then The Cat went on his way, but he told me what to say
When folks complain about acid rain
"Have no fear; we can win!
Are you ready to begin this campaign against acid rain?"

I said, "Sure enough, the acid rain will fall
If you think that's tough, just wait till you hit the wall
Don't let this little footrace keep you hiding in your bookcase
Pick up the pace, we can erase the stain of acid rain.”

"A-Bomb" with commentary

This is the opening song on the Plastic Mikey CD “Cook Up Something New!” Kevin Dempsey wrote the music, and I wrote the lyrics. The band featured Kevin on guitar and vocals, Mike Mokry on bass, Rich Alifantis on drums, Andy Blanco on sax, and myself on keyboards and vocals. We broke up shortly after releasing our CD. Occasionally, I see one of those CDs turn up on EBay or Amazon, which I find amusing. We didn’t make very many of them, and sold hardly any. I gave most of them away.

A-Bomb

Don't come out yet, I'm not ready
Wait until my world is steady
You can't understand my hunger
Till you see the strain I'm under
I just learned the tide has turned
And when I heard, the news hit me like an A-Bomb

I can hear Aladdin laughing
Something good is bound to happen
In the meantime, I can manage
Without you to change my bandage
I don't care if you think I'm square
It isn't fair to hit me with an A-Bomb

With an A-Bomb
That's what the message came on
An A-Bomb
I'm trying to pin my name on
An A-Bomb
It's time to turn the flame on
And burn till the stars become my home
And burn till the stars become my home

My desk is piled with hopes and papers
Buried under useless labors
I reign from a swivel throne with padding
Sitting when I should be standing
I don't care if you think I'm square
It isn't fair to hit me with an A-Bomb

Too much time with notes and ledgers
Gotta find some new adventures
The trip is bound to be wild and stormy
But at least I see the road before me
I just learned the tide has turned
And when I heard, the news hit me like an A-Bomb
Yeah, I just learned the tide has turned
And when I heard, the news hit me like an A-Bomb

Like an A-Bomb
That's what the message came on
An A-Bomb
I'm trying to pin my name on
An A-Bomb
It's time to turn the flame on
And burn till the stars become my home
And burn till the stars become my home

And burn till the stars become my home

"3 AM" with commentary

This song began life as an instrumental titled “Joe Beam,” because I thought it sounded like something Jobim might have written. It was to be the centerpiece song of an album of bossa nova songs called “Bossa Nouveau.” I still think that idea could work.

Come hear the sound you're about to meet
Come to the lounge that’s swinging to a bossa nova beat
Everyone’s dancing on their feet
Come to the lounge that’s grooving with a bossa nova beat
It gets underway sometime past 10
And goes on till at least 3 AM
They’re dressed up to the nines in all the hep designs
Come to the lounge that’s moving to a bossa nova beat

I will be there and I hope to see
You waiting with a cocktail made especially for me
We belong there, you and I
Dining al fresco
While the bossa rhythm fills the sky
Hear the music play
Each song a gem
And it won’t stop before 3 AM
I haven't been so happy since I don’t know when
And we’ll be just beginning when the clock hits 3 AM

3 in the morning
That’s my time of day
The kids are all sleeping
So it’s time for us to play

Here comes the sun
Must be getting late
Call it an evening, darling
Thank you for a perfect date
We’d better get some sleep, so we can start again
Next time we hear that bossa nova calling 3 AM!

"Big Plans" with commentary

“Big Plans” was first recorded on my “December 1985” cassette, and then re-recorded for inclusion in “TFM” in early 1986. After recording 60+ songs in less than 6 months, I was a bit burnt out in spring of 1986. I began sequencing another group of songs to be recorded, but only a handful ever made it to tape before I went back to school at the start of 1987. I’ve always considered that one my life’s biggest blunders: both the not finishing of the recordings and the going back to school. I ended up liking the University of Massachusetts – Boston though, even if I never once made use of my degree in Finance. The classes I really enjoyed were the ones in Religious Studies, which came as a surprise to me. In fact, I liked those courses so much that I toyed with the idea of pursuing a higher degree at Harvard Divinity School. That turned out to be yet another big plan that failed to materialize, however.

I sit at a table
With a pen and pencil
And a piece of paper
And a pink eraser
I sit, thinking
Then I stand, begin pacing
And I think as I pace
About the food we waste

Big plans to save the world
That's what it's there for
Big plans to become a savior
That's what I'm here for
Big plans to help the hungry
Provide nutrition
Big plans, a world-wide grocer
Is my ambition

A solution, a cure
It'll work, I'm sure
So simple, so clear
In less than a year
No hunger, no poor
No starvation, no war
I'm a genius and a saint
That much is plain

Big plans to save the world
That's what it's there for
Big plans to become a savior
That's what I'm here for
Big plans to help the hungry
Provide nutrition
Big plans, a world-wide grocer

Is my ambition

"Bedtime Story" with commentary

I have always been unhappy with my name. In the early 1990s, I tried turning myself into Ashley Standing, a pop music alter ego that was to be something of a male version of Madonna. Toward that end, I wrote a whole bunch of songs with sensual/sexual themes, recording four of them for a cassette called simply “Ashley Standing.” The recordings were done at Hinge Studio in Chicago, and “Bedtime Story” was by far the best of them. Some of these lyrics make me cringe today, though.

Bedtime Story

Sorry, not tonight.  I'm tired; I have to rest
I couldn't enjoy it; my mind is too stressed
Please don't be upset that I'm not in the mood
But follow me into my room
I can't stop thinking about the problems of the day
I need something to take my cares away

Stay: Tell me a bedtime story
Won't you stay--Treat me like a little boy
Stay: Tell me a bedtime story
Please stay--Treat me like your little boy

Don't excite me--keep your voice low
Rub my back nice and slow
Let your story just evolve
Give it a happy ending--problems solved
Sleep descends on the tale you create
Then let life imitate

Stay: Tell me a bedtime story
Won't you stay--Treat me like a little boy
Stay: Tell me a bedtime story
Please stay--Treat me like your little boy

In the morning, all is new
I remember nothing except you
Maybe this evening, you can come again
This is a private club, but I'll let you in

Stay: Tell me a bedtime story
Won't you stay--Treat me like a little boy
Stay: Tell me a bedtime story
Please stay--Treat me like your little boy

"Auditions" with commentary

My most fertile period musically was between the years 1984-1989, when I was living in Boston and Medford, Massachusetts. I cranked out a lot of songs, and even managed to record many of them. “Auditions” was part of a concept cassette called “Reruns.” While the recording was just a rough 4-track, and never heard by more than a few of my friends, it’s one of which I’m most proud. Ever since those few heady years, I’ve been trying to recapture the magic. While I later wrote better songs and made better recordings, I was never as happy and productive as a songwriter-musician as I was during that period.

Lining up
Listing our credits
Try to look casual
As if it happens every day
Doesn't it?
Every day in my room
I rehearse
And I try
To perfect every movement
Fame!

Trying to make it right
I'm right on time
I know the lines
I'm not even tired
From staying up all night
Wanna be an overnight success
                        "Excuse me, miss..."
                        "Oh!"
I can write this up in my diary:

Lyric: "Water" (2001)

Water

© 2001 Brian Hutzell

Running
Hot
Tired
Need water
Dry
Thirsty
Please, water!
Where can I get water?
Sun
Sweat
Feet moving
Legs aching
Body shining
Looking good
I see the water
Closing in
Splashing water
On my throat, my face,  my hair
I run on
Refreshed
Someone whistles
“Oh yeah!”
Feeling hot
Running
